The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is transforming how people access contraception across England. Community pharmacies are a trusted and convenient place to receive advice, support, and supplies for contraception—without needing a GP appointment. 

What’s New? 

  • Initiation of Oral Contraception
    You can now start the contraceptive pill directly from your local pharmacy. 
  • Ongoing Monitoring & Supply
    Repeat prescriptions for oral contraception can be managed at participating pharmacies. 
  • Emergency Contraception
    Free oral emergency contraception is available from community pharmacies nationwide. 

How It Works 

  • Self-refer or be signposted by your GP, sexual health clinic, or other NHS services. 
  • Confidential consultation with a pharmacist or pharmacy technician. 
  • Free of charge—no prescription fees apply. 
  • No need to be registered with a GP.
