Training for Professionals and Schools

Brook have been commissioned by Buckinghamshire Council to deliver training on a diverse range of sexual health and wellbeing topics. Book is a specialist sexual health service that is part of bSHaW, Buckinghamshire’s integrated sexual health and wellbeing service.

This training is free of charge to all professionals working in school and/or community settings in Buckinghamshire.

Trans Inclusive Care: Trans Identities and Barriers to Access

Overview of session

Facilitated by Spectra, this 3-hour training will help you to better understand, communicate and engage with the trans community in your services. There will be lots of changes for discussion, as well as a resource bank which will be shared with all participants for future reference.

Trans Inclusive Care: Inclusive Practice in Education LGBTQIA+

Overview of session

This 3-hour training is facilitated by Spectra, this LGBTQIA+ inclusivity course is a hands-on programme that provides training, information and education for anyone wanting to develop and enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding of inclusive practice. Ensuring inclusivity within the workplace works towards improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes for LGBTQIA+ people.

Course Objectives

This training will support you in:

  • Navigating language and definitions relating to children, teenagers, and/or adults who identify as LGBTQIA+.
  • Guiding you through recognizing the many and varied barriers and challenges that LGBTQIA+ young people experience on a social and political level- within workplaces, education, or healthcare settings, or at home.
  • Exploring topics such as the use of pronouns, different forms of discrimination, stereotyping and assumptions, hate crime, minority stress, intersectionality, marginalization, and the media.
  • Gaining a solid grounding in understanding identity formation which can be impacted by a variety of internal, external, hidden, or visible factors.
  • Finding creative ways to identify discrimination and make positive moves to challenge it in all forms.
  • Offering you greater insight into what it means to be truly inclusive and how to achieve this in practical terms.
  • Learning how your school might seek to facilitate an inclusive and safe environment for your LGBTQIA+ students. With a particular focus on feeling happy, safe, included and valued. You can consider role models, social media, resources and literature so that young people feel that they have people to talk to and know how to access support services in school and in the local community.
  • Providing reading, signposting, resources, and sources of support for LGBTQIA+ people.

HIV Awareness Training

Overview of session

Facilitated by Positively UK, this 2-hour training offers an opportunity to increase your awareness and understanding of HIV.

Course Objectives

This training aims to:

  • Increase your awareness of HIV

  • Improve the quality of services you provide to people who may be living with HIV

Come Correct C-Card Training for Professionals

Overview of session

C-Card is the free condom distribution scheme available to young people across Buckinghamshire. This 2 hours training will set you up as a distributor of free condoms as well as someone young people can talk to about sexual health and relationships. 

Course Objectives

After this training course participants will: 

  • Understand the C-Card scheme and how it operates.
  • Gain skills and knowledge to be signed off as C-Card distributors
  • Be able to demonstrate best practice condom use
  • Gain an introductory level of knowledge in safer sex topics such as contraception and STIs
  • Be able to explain the Fraser Guidelines, confidentiality and Sex and the Law.

Who should attend

This 2 hour training course is FREE to professionals working with young people in Buckinghamshire. Priority will be given to professionals working in these areas.

Consent Training

Overview of session

In this training we draw on Brook’s 50 years of experience working with young people. The training aims to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge to support young people around consent. 

Course Objectives

The training will cover the following objectives: 

  • Give a definition of consent • Describe how consent can be communicated both verbally and physically (what consent sounds like, looks like and feels like)
  • Explain the law around sexual consent
  • Explain young people’s rights and responsibilities when it comes to sex and sexual health
  • Describe the difference between types of relationships
  • Explain the importance for young people to be able to have safe, equal, healthy relationships
  • Describe healthy and unhealthy behaviours in relationships to young people
  • Identify where young people can go for help and advice

Pornography and youth produced sexual imagery

Overview of session

This training explores the influence of social media and pornography on young people’s attitudes towards relationships, sex, bodies and identity.

In this session you will learn how to discuss and challenge viral trends, using them to communicate essential messaging about consent, sexual health and body image, alongside exploring how to keep young people safe online and how to improve young people’s self-awareness about the influence of social media and pornography on their opinions and beliefs.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the key laws and research surrounding pornography and youth-produced sexual imagery
  • Identify a range of ways to teach and talk about these topics with young people
  • Confidently answer difficult/challenging questions from young people

Overview of session

This introductory session is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to implement a safe learning environment within their own setting.

Teaching Consent and Managing disclosures of sexual violence

Overview of session

Developed in response to the experiences of young people highlighted through the Everyone’s Invited movement and 2021 Ofsted review, this is essential training for any school or organisation looking to improve confidence in reacting to sexual assault disclosures, better understand the importance of consent education in mitigating sexual violence and learn how to embed this teaching as part of a spiral curriculum.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of adopting a holistic approach to educating about consent including gender, social norms and bystander approach
  • Identify a spiral curriculum approach to teaching consent
  • Explore the current context of sexual assault in the UK & learn about the effects of sexual assault
  • Build on confidence regarding how to react to a sexual assault disclosure and follow up
  • Know where to find reliable information and resources for teaching sensitive and challenging RSE topics

Healthy relationships and sexual health

Overview of session

This 2 hour session is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, confidence and tools to deliver and discuss Healthy Relationships and Sexual Health with Young People.

Overview of session

This 3-hour training equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to deliver RSE more confidently to neurodiverse young people; recognising that they have the right to learn about relationships and sex but may need lessons to be delivered differently. Our experts will support you with identifying suitable teaching methods and help you plan how you will respond to some of the challenges you might come across.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Know key terminology and laws relating to young people with SEND in education
  • Identify common barriers to good quality RSE faced by young people with SEND
  • Challenge myths and misunderstandings around the RSE needs of young people with SEND

Managing Difficult Questions

Overview of session

Young people naturally have questions when it comes to sex and relationships, and many RSE educators tell us that the unpredictability of these questions and how to answer them can be stressful and make teaching certain subjects feel daunting. This 2-hour session will equip you with the basics to create a safer learning space that encourages young people’s curiosity, answer difficult questions effectively and in an age-appropriate manner, and identify further sources of information and support.

  • Create a safe space to teach RSE
  • Anticipate some of the different questions young people may ask
  • Feel confident in providing factual, evidence-based answers to common questions

Supporting and Including LGBT+ Young People

Overview of session

This training draws upon the lived experiences of LGBT+ young people to help you understand the influences and pressures young people face as they explore their emerging sexuality, create RSE lessons that are LGBT+ inclusive and friendly, and know how to manage challenging questions and beliefs.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the statutory requirement for LGBT+ inclusive education.
  • Identify the needs of young LGBT+ people in the classroom and challenge HBT bullying effectively.
  • Understand how to deliver sessions in an LGBT+ inclusive way.
  • Recognise common terminology.
  • Understand the difference between sex, sexuality and gender.

Teaching Sensitive Subjects

Overview of session

This session takes a trauma informed and lived experience approach to teaching sensitive subjects. Typically, two sensitive topics will be covered in detail; these will be tailored to what you would find most useful and include pleasure, LGBTQIA+, pornography and consent.

During the 2-hour session you will learn about the importance and relevance of including your chosen topics in your RSE curriculum, receive practical advice on how to teach the topics and guidance on what content to include.

  • Focus on two chosen topics in practice

Understanding Masculinity and Tackling Misogyny

Overview of session

In response to increasing concerns about the dangerous impact of online misogyny on students, Brook has developed this training session to support teachers to understand and tackle harmful misogynistic narratives in the classroom.

This 3.5-hour training prepares professionals to understand gender related pressures among young people, to know the nature and scale of online misogyny, and to identify and mitigate the push-pull factors that attract young people towards extreme online ideologies. This training includes practical RSE tips and activities to increase professionals’ confidence in raising an awareness and tackling misogyny in the classroom.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the harm gender stereotypes cause young people of all genders
  • Define misogyny and give examples of how it affects young people
  • Understand the impact of digital content on young people’s gender norms and values
  • Recognise and mitigate the push-pull factors that attract young people towards extreme ideologies
  • Feel confident in raising young people’s awareness of misogyny and tackle harmful ideas in the classroom

Sexual Health in the Community

Overview of session

Everyone has a right to safe, confidential, accessible healthcare. This training provides professionals who work in the community with the skills to have practical and inclusive conversations about sexual health to support young people. By the end of the training, you will have a better understanding of sexual health policy and confidentiality guidelines. You will also take away technical knowledge, while being able to advise young people and signpost them to the correct agencies.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance and characteristics of a sex positive and inclusive approach to sexual health
  • Feel confident to talk about a range of contraceptive methods with young people and signpost them to appropriate services
  • Tell young people about the most common STIs, their symptoms, testing and treatment, signpost to services, and counter common myths and challenge STI stigma
  • Explain the benefits of barrier methods, tell young people about condom distribution schemes and carry out a condom demonstration
  • Recognise important safeguarding issues related to young people’s sexual health and wellbeing and be able to take a multiagency approach to keeping young people safe

LGBT+ Awareness and Inclusivity

Overview of session

This 2-hour training aims to raise awareness of key terms and definitions within the LGBT+ community, increase participants’ knowledge of LGBT+ rights and identify ways in which we can better support people from LGBT+ communities in our own practice.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Describe some of the issues faced by the LGBT+ community
  • Understand key terms relating to sexual orientation and gender diversity, including the difference between sex and gender
  • Identify ways to make young people’s services more LGBT+ inclusive
